Computer Repair Courses

Whether you want to fix computers for a living, plan to moonlight with a little computer fix-it business on the side, or just want to know how to fix your own computer, then computer repair courses make sense for you.  Of course, the kind of training you need depends on what you plan to do with it.  If you need advanced training, you will need to take different computer courses than if you just need to know simple repair techniques.  It is important that you research the types of courses that will benefit you the most.

Once you have determined the kind of training you really want, you can begin to look for the best classes to take to meet your needs.  Budget may be a big part of the decision making.  More advanced computer repair courses cost more than the basic classes.  However, if you plan to go into the business of fixing computers, you will need to take a course of study that leads to computer certification or a degree.  Because there are many types of certifications available, it is a good idea to do a little research into what you really need.  For instance, if you are upgrading your skills for a job you currently have or one you want to move up to within your current company, you need to take the computer repair classes that your employer requires for that position.  If you want to be able to fix a certain type of computer, then you will need to take computer classes that teach you all about that type of machine.

Many universities offer computer courses as part of their curriculum.  Degrees in computer science are main-stream and there are many subcategories within this degree.  However, there are also many technology colleges and training schools where computer repair courses are offered, and the cost might be lower.  At a technical college, the amount of time spent to get the certification is often less than at a university, because they specialize in the technical courses.

Computer Repair Technician

The computer repair technician usually needs a CompTIA A+ computer certification for entry level computer repair jobs.  Most employers require the A+ certification because they know if you are A+ certified you can fix computers.  A few years back Microsoft certified technicians were employed that could not trouble shoot and fix computers, but A+ techs could.  To become A+ certified you need to take 2 tests that require you to have a good understand of both computer hardware and software.  You also need some good trouble shooting skills and some soft skills for effectively dealing with the public.

There are many good A+ computer repair schools.  Most are taught by working certified technician that teach very relevant computer repair and maintenance skills.  Regional Occupation Centers (ROPs) are great low cost schools that can be very helpful for preparing computer repair student to take and pass the CompTIA A+ certification test.  You can also find good classes at many community colleges and trade schools.  Most schools also employ A+ certified teachers that have recent computer repair field experience.

If you already have some computer repair and maintenance experience you might try the ExamCram A+ test prep book that has 4 practic exams.  The questions you miss will discuss and explain the reasoning for the answer which is a great help for preparing for the cretification test.  Once you obtain at least an 80% pass rate you are ready to take the certification test which only requires a 70% to pass.  Most of my students pass the first time at taking the practice exams.

Craig’s List is an excellent resource for finding part-time and temporary work, which will often lead to full-time work within a few weeks.  The part-time and temp work will help to quickly round out your resume with lots of difference work experience, new skills, and knowledge acquired.

You will discover that computer hardware is very reliable except for power supplies and hard drives, which are eaisly replace.  You will need to develop some skills to quickly restore Windows operating systems.  Since 99% of the problems you encounter are Windows software related.
